March 25th 2012 Sketches

Well, it was a nice day out. New sketches from last Sunday thanks to Jessica, Devenne and Ali!

These were done on the Sea-bus. the weird thing about the sea-bus is they kick you off after you arrive at the other end. So, note for the next time... only go on the sea-bus if you really want to walk around North Van... and really now, who does?

Vancouver Comic Jam

I just came back from the Vancouver Comic Jam and I am exhausted, but invigorated!

It was super fun meeting all these exciting artists and art fanatics. There's something about like-minded people, and people working towards similar goals that feels like coming home, a warm cup of coco.

Anyway, I talked to a lot of people at the group and got a lot of interest in this group. The idea is simple, to get together and draw for fun and for exercise. Drawing/sketching is like daily exercise, and it's always more fun with people there to encourage you and perhaps offer some advice (if asked for).

This group has so much potential in that it can be a place where we not only meet new people, have fun drawing, but also share valuable knowledge and insight into our own artistic styles and creative process.

I also decided to switch the time to 4PM now, since I've gotten more than one comment that 4pm works better.

So every Sunday, 4PM, Waterfront Station (the main concord) - I will be hopping on a skytrain and creepily drawing people for an hour or two. See you there!

Sketches from last Sunday

I noticed some other artists using markers and inks to make their sketches look more "complete" so this week, I shamelessly stole that technique. As per usual, it takes me a little while to get warmed up and there is really only one or two sketches on each page I really enjoy :)

The first two are warm-ups, getting in the flow of drawing.

I added the colours later. It's something I picked up from Stephen Silver's Sketchbook

This week, I was working on capturing character moreso than anything else.

Sometimes I get tired after 2 hours of sketching, maybe you can tell where.

This guy was wearing sunglasses; it wasn't that sunny, he had to be drawn.

What?

The Mission: To have fun drawing together. Everyone is welcomed from professional artists, students or just people who want to draw for fun. The cool thing about sketching is no one will ever judge you - no matter what skill level you're at - everyone has a child in them that likes to draw. And it's free! (except for the Skytrain fee).

Sketch everyone you see on the Skytrain  - more fun with more numbers! "Honey is that a sketch group gang?" "Great Scott! I do believe it is!"

We will meet up every Sunday at the main entrance of the Skytrain Waterfront Station - look for the persons with sketchbooks and pencils. The good news is the transit fee for Sundays are 1 zone for all.

Credit: This group was inspired by Bobby Chiu's Toronto Subway Sketch Group. After meeting Bobby and participating in the Subway sketch group, I was hooked. I decided to keep doing it in Vancouver, and see if anyone wanted to join in on some Vancouver Skytrain Sketching.
